Former Boise State athlete Kurt Felix of Grenada recorded 4,290 points through the first five events of the decathlon Wednesday in Rio de Janeiro.
He had season-best marks in the 100 meters (10.93 seconds for 19th place) and shot put (48 feet, 5.5 inches for ninth place).
Felix also placed eighth in high jump (6-9.5), 13th in long jump (24-4.25) and 16th in the 400 (49.14).
Defending champion Ashton Eaton of the United State leads with 4,621 points. The decathlon concludes Thursday with the 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 meters.
