Boise State volleyball picked second; Coby Karl named new head coach

Mountain West coaches picked Boise State to finish second in their preseason poll released Wednesday. Junior outside hitter Sierra Nobley, senior middle blocker Maddy O’Donnell and junior libero Maddi Osburn (Vallivue High) were named to the all-conference team, with Nobley selected as the player of the year.

Boise State’s three all-conference players led the league. Colorado State was picked to repeat as conference champions.

Boise State opens the season with three straight road tournaments starting Aug. 27-28 at the TCU Tournament in Fort Worth, Texas.

The Broncos will not play at home until they host the Boise State Classic from Sept. 15-17, featuring Arizona State, Santa Clara, Portland State and UC Davis.

COBY KARL: Former Boise State basketball player Coby Karl, the son of longtime NBA coach George Karl, is the new head coach of the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA Development League, according to multiple media sources. Karl, who played several seasons of professional basketball, was an assistant coach with the Westchester (N.Y.) Knicks of the D-League last season.

CROSS COUNTRY: Boise State will host the Mountain West Championships at Falcon Crest Golf Club in Kuna on Oct. 28.
