Boise State athletic department’s No. 2 leaves for Syracuse, too

The man who led the Boise State athletic department’s rehab from NCAA probation and was the interim athletic director in July has taken a job at Syracuse.

John Cunningham, the senior associate athletic director for external relations, rejoins former Boise State Athletic Director Mark Coyle with the Orange.

Coyle took a job at Syracuse in June. Cunningham served as the interim athletic director until Curt Apsey arrived earlier this month as the Broncos’ new athletic director.

Cunningham originally was hired in 2011 as the executive director of NCAA compliance at Boise State, a new position created to help the school overcome NCAA penalties for infractions that included a loss of institutional control.

He became Coyle’s top assistant in 2014.

Cunningham will be the deputy athletics director for administration at Syracuse.

“John is a dynamic athletics administrator who will be a great addition to our team,” Coyle said in a statement.

Boise State President Bob Kustra said in June at Apsey’s introductory press conference that Cunningham would remain a Bronco. In fact, Kustra said that Apsey considered Cunningham an essential part of the department.

“John is on board,” Kustra said then. “... That’s a team that will be able to continue to work together.”
