Defending champion Emma Bates took 10th in the 10,000 meters Thursday at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field. The senior earned second-team All-American status — her 11th All-American accolade over a five-year career. Bates remained in second for about 21 laps of the 25-lap race, catching up to the changing first-place runner. With a mile to go, she pulled to approximately a 40-meter lead but let off her pace, finishing in 33 minutes, 50.14 seconds. Bates will compete in Saturday’s 5,000. She took fourth at last year’s meet. Teammate Marisa Howard advanced to the finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase, running a season-best 9:54.25 for the fourth-fastest time. She will compete in the finals for the second straight season, ensuring all five Broncos who qualified for nationals will compete in their respective finals. The steeplechase final is Saturday. Howard took second last season.
IDAHO: Senior Alycia Butterworth finished 19th (10:28.94) in the semifinals of the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase.
