Boise State has been playing sand volleyball — an official NCAA sport — for two years. All matches have been on the road, until Friday.
The Broncos hosted Oregon and Arizona on their new courts on the southwest corner of campus, beating the Ducks 4-1 and falling to the 10th-ranked Wildcats 5-0. Each match consisted of five two-player teams, a few hundred fans sitting on bleachers or the nearby grass berm, and even a little sunshine on an otherwise cloudy day.
“It was a great start for us on our home sand, and I am glad we finally had a chance to show the people of Boise and Bronco Nation what sand volleyball is all about,’’ coach Shawn Garus said.
The matches marked the end of the season for Boise State, which finishes 4-11.
