Boise Hawks swept by Eugene, drop fourth straight NWL game

Statesman staff

Eugene broke open a close game with a five-run sixth inning, and the Emeralds completed a three-game series sweep with a 7-1 victory over the Boise Hawks in a Northwest League baseball game Friday night.

The Hawks (24-36, 8-14 NWL second half) induced a flyout and a bases-loaded groundout in the bottom of the sixth, but the Emeralds (45-15, 17-5) responded with two hits. Zach Short’s single to left field scored two runs, and after a walk filled the bases again, Wladimir Galindo cleared them with a double for a 7-0 advantage. Luis Castro scored for Boise in the top of the ninth after hitting a leadoff double, stealing third and finding home on a Willie Abreu double. But Wesley Jones grounded into the visitors’ third double play of the night to end the game.

No. 8 hitter Wilkyns Jimenez went 3-for-3 for half of Boise’s hits. Starting pitcher Kyle Cedotal (1-1) took the loss — the Hawks’ fourth straight — after allowing two runs in 3 2/3 innings.

Boise’s 11-game road trip continues with five at Vancouver (25-35, 9-13) starting at 8:05 p.m. Saturday.
