Tuesday’s announcement of next season’s Mountain West men’s basketball schedule provided a mixed bag for Boise State. On one hand, the Broncos don’t have to play at San Diego State. On the other, they have succeeded where almost all others fail at the notoriously difficult Viejas Arena.

Because of the nature of scheduling in the 11-team Mountain West, the Broncos’ 18-game conference slate features one game apiece against the Aztecs and UNLV. Boise State hosts San Diego State on Jan. 7 or 8 and visits UNLV on Jan. 3 or 4. In the Broncos’ four trips to San Diego as Mountain West members, they’ve lost twice by a combined three points and won their past two visits. The Aztecs are 32-5 the past two seasons at home.

Boise State is set to open conference play Dec. 27 or 28 at Utah State and return home Dec. 31 or Jan. 1 to face Colorado State. Nevada, likely a title contender, visits Boise on Jan. 24 or 25. The Broncos’ home finale, against defending MW Tournament champion Fresno State, will be Feb. 28 or March 1.

The dates of each game are subject to change because of television agreements, which are likely to be decided in August. Boise State has not set its nonconference schedule, though it is known it will play at Oregon and host Portland. The Broncos also are expected to host Northwest Christian, which will feature coach Leon Rice’s son Brock on its roster, in an exhibition. Boise State will also play in the Charleston Classic on Nov. 17, 18 and 20. That field includes defending national champion Villanova, Central Florida, College of Charleston, Mississippi State, UTEP, Wake Forest and Western Michigan.
