Boise cyclist Kristin Armstrong finishes fifth at world championships

RICHMOND, Va. — Boise’s Kristin Armstrong finished fifth in the time trial Tuesday, and now must wait for what should by a likely nomination from USA Cycling to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Armstrong, 42, the two-time Olympic gold medalist who has come out of retirement in pursuit of her fourth Olympic team, would have locked up an automatic roster spot with a top-three finish.

Linda Melanie Villumsen of New Zealand (40 minutes, 29.87 seconds) won the 18.6-mile race on the downtown streets of Richmond, finishing 20.58 seconds ahead of Armstrong.

“It was a tough, tough course. ... I gave it everything I had today,” said Armstrong, the top American finisher.
