Timberline’s Mangum scores three touchdowns in Idaho State football rout

Michael Sanders threw three touchdown passes to Madison Mangum (Timberline High) and five overall to lead Idaho State over Division II Black Hills State 55-0 in a season opener Saturday at Holt Arena. It was the Bengals’ first shutout since blanking Montana Western in 2005.

“It was an excellent coaching adjustment,” ISU head coach Mike Kramer said. “The speed of communication in the game was easily the most impressive thing for us because we’ve had good individual defensive players over the last couple years but we’ve never had 11 guys communicate as well as they can on every single play.”

Sanders, a junior college transfer, completed 15-of-18 passes for 278 yards before ending his day early. Junior Jakori Ford rushed for a career-high 201 yards as the Bengals rolled up 710 yards of offense.

Sanders threw touchdown passes of 41 yards and 9 yards to Mangum in the first 1:46 of the game. The second one, which came at about the same time Mangum’s brother, Tanner, completed a Hail Mary to lead BYU to a victory over Nebraska, was No. 2 on the SportsCenter Top 10. Tanner’s pass was No. 1.

“It’s pretty good. I mean what do you say? It’s pretty good. We see those every day. Really we do,” Kramer said. “We see those every single day like that. It’s just like, ‘Really? Okay. Really?’ He’s just a great competitor, a competitive player and he plays well in the spotlight which is what you want your best players to be able to do.”

Xavier Finney scored on a 1-yard run, then Sanders connected again with Mangum. Sanders threw touchdown passes of 29 and 30 yards to Hagen Graves (Skyview High) to finish the half ahead 42-0. CJ Langlow returned a blocked punt for a score, and Tanner Gueller hit CJ Hatchett with a TD pass to finish the scoring.
