The Boise Nationals U-18 girls soccer team reported to Simplot Sports Complex on Thursday morning for a penalty-kick shootout to break a tie and determine the last qualifier for the quarterfinals in the Far West Regional tournament.
The Nationals beat LA Galaxy of Southern California 3-1 in the tiebreaker. Watch the video to see how they did it – and what the victory meant to the team.
The quarterfinals are Friday.
The tiebreaker was held because of a three-way tie in the Nationals’ three-team pool. All three teams were 1-1 and had a zero goal differential. Eastside (Wash.) was awarded first place for allowing the fewest goals. That left a two-way tie. Galaxy beat the Nationals in pool play, but that was only factored into the initial tiebreaker (each team was 1-1 against the other two). They had the same goal differential and goals allowed. The shootout was held Thursday, on the tournament’s off-day, because Galaxy didn’t have a game scheduled Wednesday and wasn’t at the complex when the tie occurred.
