Boise cyclist Kristin Armstrong, who hadn’t raced since winning a second consecutive gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics, finished seven seconds off the lead at the Tour of California time trial Friday. Evelyn Stevens of San Francisco, a two-time national time trial champion, won by more than 2 seconds over Lauren Stephens of Dallas.
“I had high expectations today, of course with my history, I wanted — not expected — to come out on top,” Armstrong, 41, told the media after the race. “I think that for my first race back, I can’t set the expectations too high. I just now have to put my head down and get to work.’’
