Former college soccer player missing after Salmon River incident

Former Saint Martin’s University soccer player Austin Kelley, 26, was reported missing Sunday after he was swept down the Salmon River near Riggins, his mother, Cortney Kelly, told The Olympian.

Kelley is presumed dead from drowning, according to the Idaho County Sheriff’s Office.

Family and friends are still searching for Kelley, who worked as an assistant high school soccer coach and a civil engineer in Olympia, Washington. Kelley is married with a new baby, according to The Olympian’s story.

A “Bring Austin Home” vigil is scheduled 8 p.m. Wednesday at Olympia High School, where Kelley went to high school and worked as an assistant coach, according to the story.

He and others had been fishing, his mother said, when they attempted to cross the Salmon River to some hot springs. The Idaho County Sheriff’s Office stated in a press release that Kelley was not wearing a life jacket, and friends’ attempts to rescue him were unsuccessful.
