Lake Coeur d'Alene

What's there: Trout, bass, landlocked chinook salmon, panfish, northern pike.

Description: This monster, 25,000-acre lake boasts a variety of fishing. Several small lakes off the main lake, called the Chain Lakes, also offer good fishing. The lake is well developed with lots of boat launches, campgrounds, state parks, and resorts, which makes it a great destination for a road trip. Despite its large overall size, there are still lots of places to take a small boat and find some intimate fishing in uncrowded places.

Getting there: Take U.S. 95 up to Coeur d'Alene, or cut off from 95 on Idaho 5 to fish the south end of the lake.

Drive time: About eight hours.
