Big Wood River

What's there: Rainbow trout and brown trout.

Description: The Big Wood gets overshadowed by nearby Silver Creek, but it also has good trout fishing and one of the longest seasons in the state. Big Wood's trout are typically smaller than Silver Creek's, but they're not as finicky. You can camp along the banks of the Big Wood, or fish within walking distance of downtown Ketchum. The Big Wood has excellent early season and late season fishing. Check the regulations because this river has five exceptions to the general seasons and fishing rules.

Getting there: Take I-84 east to Mountain Home and U.S. 20 and north on Idaho 75. Fish around Bellevue and Ketchum.

Drive time: About 2 hours.
