South Fork of the Boise River

What's there: Trout, whitefish.

Description: The most popular part of the South Fork is the dam-fed section between Anderson Ranch Dam and Arrowrock Reservoir. It has a thriving population of rainbow trout that fly anglers love to catch. But there's also a popular stretch of the river above Anderson Ranch Reservoir that has plenty of smaller rainbows. The South Fork Canyon is a favorite float for whitewater boaters during summer when irrigation flows raise the river level to 1,200 cfs. There are also numerous camping areas along the river.

Getting there: Take I-84 east to Mountain Home and U.S. 20 to Anderson Ranch Dam Road. Follow the road to the river. To access the upper river, continue on U.S. 20 to the Pine/Featherville Road.

Drive time: About 1 to 2 hours.
