Deadwood offers great camping and lots of sites near the water.

There are four Forest Service campgrounds here - Cozy Cove, Barneys, Howers and Riverside - as well as dispersed camping around the reservoir. It's rough, bumpy road up and over Scott Mountain Road and down into the reservoir, but once you're there, you will enjoy a pristine mountain lake and lush forests.

How to get there: Drive north from Boise on Idaho 55 to Banks. Take the Banks to Lowman Road to the Scott Mountain Road (Forest Service Road 555). Plan two to three hours. High-ground-clearance vehicles recommended, and don't tow a trailer. You can also get there from the north by going through Cascade, which is a much longer, but smoother, road.

Activities: Boating, fishing, hiking and motorcycle/ATV riding.

Amenities: Outhouse, picnic tables and fire rings.

Nearest place to get supplies: Garden Valley.

Fees/reservations: $12 a night; reservations available at www.recreation.gov.

Information: Lowman Ranger District, (208) 259-3361.
