North Fork Championship offers world class kayak racing June 11-13

The event will pit some of the world’s best kayakers against the toughest rapid in one of Idaho’s best whitewater rivers, the North Fork of the Payette. Racing will include a 1-mile downriver sprint, a BoaterX race where six paddlers race through a rapid, and the showcase event, the giant slalom race through Jacob’s Ladder on the North Fork, where boaters start by sliding down a launch and landing at the top of a long, complicated set of Class V rapids. All races will take place on the North Fork between Banks and Smiths Ferry. The event is free for spectators. For details and videos of previous races, go to northforkchampionship.com.

Free Fishing Day is Saturday

Idaho Fish and Game invites veteran and novice anglers of all ages, residents and nonresidents alike, to celebrate the day by fishing anywhere in Idaho without a license. Though fishing license requirements are suspended for this special day, all other rules, such as limits or tackle restrictions, remain in effect. Free fishing day includes salmon; anglers don’t need a license or salmon permit, but they are still subject to all bag and possession limits. F&G will also sponsor many events in Southwest Idaho where loaner tackle will be provided, as well as experienced anglers who will help novices. For a full list of free fishing day events and details go to Idahostatesman.com/fishing.
