Attorney General Lawrence Wasden often upsets his fellow Republicans in the Legislature when he tells them legislation they propose violates the law. So they often ignore his advice, pass the legislation anyway, and the result is predictable. The state loses in court, and taxpayers lose by paying millions in legal fees.
Now, the AG is in trouble with Eastern Idaho legislators who are even threatening his budget. His sin this time? Enforcing an agreement with the federal government to clean up nuclear waste at the Idaho National Laboratory by not allowing more waste in until they live up to the agreement.
Normally. our legislators fall all over each other at any opportunity to blast the feds, but not this time. They talk about “national security,” but I suspect this is much more about money and jobs in their districts. I support the INL and the jobs it brings to Idaho, but not at any cost.
AG Wasden is doing exactly what we elected him to do — putting the law above partisan politics and ideology, and telling legislators what they need to hear, not what they want to hear. Too bad many of our legislators don’t follow his example. Thank you, AG Wasden.
