Last week I was enjoying a gorgeous day of fishing on the South Fork of the Boise River, in the deep canyon below Anderson Ranch Dam. The flowing water and a kingfisher’s complaints that I was disturbing his fishing spot were the only sounds in an otherwise perfect silence. Life is sweet.
My quiet reverie was suddenly demolished by two A-10 jets roaring down the canyon, just above the canyon walls. After I got my heart restarted, my immediate thought was, “What if they would have been those F-15s or the even noisier F-35s? I’d be hearing-impaired for life.”
Please spare me the “sound of freedom” platitudes. We will be just as free and our nation will be just as safe if the jets do their low-level flight maneuvers out in the hundreds of thousands of acres of desert we have reserved for them, south of Mountain Home. It’s not unpatriotic to expect common courtesy from our military.
