If you were not moved by the photo of the deceased Syrian toddler washed ashore in Turkey, then you might not be human. President Obama will be condemned if he escalates our military commitment in the region, and he will be condemned if he does not, but there is a third option with little to no political liability. Long before the U.S. entered WWI, American volunteers formed the Lafayette Escadrille French Air force; before America entered WWII, American volunteers joined the Eagle Squadron in the Royal Air force, Canadian forces and Flying Tigers of the Chinese Air Force. There is a historical and moral precedence of allowing volunteers to combat evil, even when their own government is slow to do so. Obama should allow current and reserve U.S. military to volunteer to serve against ISIS and be paid. Obama should allow U.S. citizens who volunteer to receive training, equipment and travel to the region to be connected with other organized forces.
