A few weeks ago we backpacked in the Hells Canyon area (Seven Devils) and I was astounded about the horrible conditions in there.
There are standing dead trees, downed timber across most of the trails — and this goes on for miles. People and horses have cut trails around the dead timber, causing terrible erosion problems. Even at the entrance of the trail system, the wooden sign indicating the wilderness was in pieces and a picnic table was broken down the middle.
The condition of this wilderness was an embarrassment to the state of Idaho, as well as my hiking party.
