For hikers and bikers, help prevent forest fires. Construct and use a “backpack solar oven” made from recycled cardboard and aluminum foil. Purchase a small thermometer, a lightweight black pan and plastic turkey bags. Place the constructed oven in direct sun. Place the food in the turkey bag on the black pan. Cook at 250 to 275 degrees. Also excellent to boil drinking water.
Pattern for the oven is available at County Extension Offices, 4-H project called Outdoor Cooking Fun on page 11. A great group project.
Campers with space capacity may purchase a glass covered insulated oven, 20 pounds, which bakes at 350 plus degrees. I use mine on sunny days. Contact Sun Ovens Int. online.
