Professor Herken’s myths, Aug. 3. I can personally attest to the prior warning of the atomic bomb on Nagasaki. On July 31, 1945, my crew was one of the planes that bombed Nagasaki and on the bomb run, we dumped thousands of leaflets warning of the coming raid that would cause total destruction to the city and its people. We were aware of their content, but we had no knowledge of the existence of an atomic bomb. We feared the ability of the Japanese to bring more anti-aircraft guns against us.
I am sure the noted professor is a reader of many books but I wish he had personal knowledge of his writings.
