Letter: Roundabouts

Regarding roundabouts (A6, July 31).

According to Richard Retting, a former transportation researcher at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, roundabouts were first built in the United States in the early 1990s. He is way off with this information.

I remember southeast Portland, Ore., had at least one as far back as the early 1940s in Ladds Addition. In the center of it was the largest Rhododendron I have ever seen.
