Letter: Confederate flag

The recent attacks and removals on the Confederate flag are more about power and ego when bleeding heart, do-gooder, left-leaning liberals impose their beliefs on a symbol of Southern heritage. The conservative South Carolina governor, Nikki Haley, having the Confederate flag removed, a surprise — of course we can expect Boise’s icon, Dave Bieter, whom his fans delight in him because he rides his bicycle to work, to have the Mississippi flag taken away. Why? “The flag is a symbol of hate.” Who is supposed to hate whom through this flag?

Sept. 15,1999, Wedgewood Baptist Church, Fort Worth, Texas, Larry Gene Ashbrook walks in to this church rally. He takes a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun and a .380-caliber handgun, spouting anti-Baptist rhetoric, opened fire and seven people were slain. The news coverage at the time by the big three networks I remember was obligatory and above all ... paltry. This killing was no less horrific than this year’s June 17 murders at the Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C.: The media coverage was way too excessive. This is just another illustration as to how liberals pick and choose when it comes to so-called “hate” crimes.
