Rather than berating Democrats of an era 150 years ago, most of whose descendants have turned the corner with regard to human rights, Mr. Addonizio could have celebrated the actions of the outspoken Republican governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley. The Republican and all the Democratic members of the South Carolina Senate worked to remove a long-standing offensive symbol of white supremacy and defiance in a state belonging to a country of the people, by the people and for the people — all the people.
