Count me as one delighted with the Pope speaking out about global warming, but I am stunned at the hypocrisy of it. Many of the dangers posed by global warming have to do with human overpopulation, and this was not mentioned in his critique. Leaving human overpopulation out of the debate is like ignoring the cause of the whole problem. Tell me how you can have three or four children and not buy consumer goods. How are we going to cut down on energy consumption when everyone has their cellphones and their air conditioning? So let’s not talk about a quick fix.
The Catholic Church has always been against birth control. The only form of birth control allowed has been the rhythm method, which calls for sexual abstinence during the time a woman is able to get pregnant. So how has that worked out?
We may be at the point where not just our way of life but life itself may be at stake. It’s probably already too late, so it really doesn’t matter what the Pope says. The Catholic Church helped create the problem, and they are seeing the result. That gives me some small amount of satisfaction, as an atheist.
