Letter: Fireworks

Am wondering why we still allow fireworks to be sold here, knowing full well how much of a tinderbox Idaho and the West in general are at the moment. I hate the constant noise and smoke that goes on in my neighborhood well after midnight on the Fourth. People pay little or no attention to firework safety, and the potential for injury and fire seems to increase every year. Is it really worth it to see our neighbors’ homes and our land around us destroyed merely for the sake of momentary entertainment that has nothing to do with the founding of our country and why we actually celebrate? Freedom to burn down homes and scare animals is not something that needs to be protected and allowed to continue. Let the cities put on a safe display for the masses and ban fireworks for sale to the general public.
