Letter: ‘Family’ debate

The World Congress of Families (WCF) is a 100 percent American-run, Illinois-based organization founded in 1995. The WCF’s stated mission is to spread “pro-family” views — specifically opposition to LGBT and women’s rights, worldwide.

In February 2014, the Southern Poverty Law Center added the WCF to its list of anti-LGBT groups for the WCF’s involvement with Vladimir Putin’s 2013 Russian anti-LGBT laws and opposing LGBT rights internationally, specifically in Africa, Eastern Europe and Australia.

The WCF recently announced that for the first time its annual “conference” is to be held in America, namely Salt Lake City, in late October 2015. Utah Gov. Gary Herbert supports the conference. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is scheduled to perform.

Several major churches, conservative groups and George Bush’s administration have been past major sponsors of the WCF. Many still maintain close personal ties to the organization. The WCF is active in Idaho and sponsors some of the most extreme anti-rights legislation seen at the Statehouse.

Exporting this point of view to families worldwide is not “pro-family” or “American.” Supporting the imposition of the WCF’s sanctimonious views on the world is cruel and supremely arrogant.
