Letters to the Editor

Letter: Islam

I am proud of the red, white and blue flowing in my blood. It is a country where all can practice his or her religion. It disturbs me to hear about a group in Texas that had a contest to abuse the prophet of Islam, a prophet that I believe in as a Muslim. The event offered a $10,000 prize to the winning cartoon — but one is left asking what society has gained from such cartoons.

The Quran recognizes the right to freedom of speech in five different sections and nowhere does it permit violence as a response. Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, the Promised Messiah and founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, once said: “Religion is worth the name only so long as it is in consonance with reason. If it fails to satisfy that requisite, if it has to make up for its discomfiture in argument by handling the sword, it needs no other argument for its falsification. The sword it wields cuts its own throat before reaching others.” The actions of the gunmen are not Islamic. The hatred being spread by groups like American Freedom Defensive initiative is also bad for our society. May God protect America. Amen.
