Harvey Beck’s letter (April 17) stated that the Greek “arsenokoite” means “sodomite.” Not so. First, the actual word is “arsenokoites.” Second, nowhere in Greek does the word mean “sodomite,” (a word which, by the way, has pretty much lost any meaning in today’s English). A quick search through scholarly lexicons yields this: in ancient Greek usage, the word never referred to homosexuality in the contemporary sense. The closest is regarding temple prostitution. A little homework, please, Mr. Beck.
