Who needs medical professionals when we have the Republican-led Idaho Legislature? You know, the group that believes in smaller, less intrusive government. The group that is obsessed with telling women how to manage their health. Senate Bill 1102 mandates that physicians performing abortions have admitting privileges to a hospital within 30 miles of where the abortion is performed. What if the hospital is 30.6 miles away?
Does this mean that all medical procedures performed on men and woman have to be done by a doctor with admitting privileges to a hospital within 30 miles of where the procedure is performed? If no, why not?
I eagerly await the Legislature dictating where and when I can get my prostrate exam, colonoscopy, teeth cleaned and eyes examined. Let’s not forget blood testing, heart exams and check-ups for skin cancer.
If your medical professional doesn’t meet the new rules, you may want to schedule your medical appointments and surgery with your local legislator. Men, these Republicans think they know what is best for women’s health, so I wouldn’t be too worried about a few incisions here and there. Make sure, however, that you tell them you’re a man.
