I appreciate the recently published articles by Rocky Barker that address climate change and how Idaho will be affected by it. Unfortunately, there are still a few people who don’t believe that greenhouse gases resulting from the burning of fossil fuels are dramatically changing our climate. Mr. Barker and the Statesman should continue to educate the public about climate change regularly so that more people will understand that we need to act quickly in order to curtail greenhouse gas emissions. A fee on carbon and dividend policy would be the most effective way to make the switch from fossil fuels to clean energy sources. Under this plan, a fee would be placed on fossil fuels and the fees collected would be paid to individuals, not kept by the government. Our Congress needs to pass a bill that implements a fee on carbon and dividend as proposed by the Citizens’ Climate Lobby, a national climate action organization. Rep. Mike Simpson should consider sponsoring such legislation.
