Letter: Overpopulation

I am glad the pope was here in the U.S. and I am also glad he made remarks about violence and global warming. I was not surprised, however, that he did not mention overpopulation, which is one of the causes of global warming and violence.

As a person who has no children, I am pretty aware of the path some people take even if they have no desire for kids. I had “the equipment” for a child, but somehow I managed to think about our planet and the resources it would take to have one. A 2-year-old in the U.S. has used more carbon than an 80-year-old man in Tanzania has used in his lifetime. With all the plastic and other nonsense kids are supposed to play with or wear, it’s no wonder we are in an environmental crisis.

Please think twice about having children. You are not being selfish if you choose not to have kids.
