Mayor Dave Bieter deserves another four years. Bieter has devoted his last 12 years as mayor to making Boise the “most livable city in the country.” Bieter has absolutely succeeded.
One example of livablity is an urban environment that emphasizes density. The city’s plan to add 1,000 new apartments by 2020 demonstrates Bieter’s understanding that adding residents to downtown will spawn commerce and development. More downtown housing means less reliance on automobiles and a smaller carbon footprint for our community.
Judy Peavey-Derr claims Boiseans are overtaxed and that Bieter has disregarded the South and West Boise neighborhoods. However, Peavey-Derr offers no solutions on where to cut taxes but still generate the revenue needed to ensure city employees earn a living wage and essential city services can continue.
Furthermore, Peavey-Derr only cites a lack of sidewalks in South and West Boise as evidence of bias, but fails to mention that the 2013 bond championed by Bieter would have built a variety of parks in these neighborhoods. Peavey-Derr seems to think that Boise can both lower taxes and build more parks. But she can’t have it both ways.
