Some think the way to stop mass shootings like the one in Oregon is to remove our citizens’ right to own guns. But then, the only citizens with guns would be criminals.
We need to think outside the political “bandwagon box.” The lunatic who shot those students last week is reported to have said, “the more people I kill, the more notoriety I will get.” Some write a “manifesto” so they will be seen and heard by the world. Media, listen up. The publicity these killers get, whether alive or not to witness it, is what they want — so please stop broadcasting the names and faces of these killers. Yes, understandably citizens should be told something about the killer. Fine. Provide the age, background and be done with it. It doesn’t help anyone to know the name or see the face. What it does is stir a yearning for other like-minded lunatics to soon create some fame for themselves.
If the media would make the killers nameless and faceless, and instead focus on the victims — honoring them and making them the spotlight, I truly believe these rampages would lose their allure for many would-be shooters.
