During the years 2012-2014, the state of Idaho reimbursed Planned Parenthood about $80,000 via Medicaid payments (Statesman, Oct. 6, 2015). In the past several months, investigations into the videos that purport to show Planned Parenthood executives discussing the sale of fetal tissue have shown, repeatedly, that the videos were heavily edited and that Planned Parenthood was not guilty of any crime.
However, Rep. Brent Crane, R-Nampa, and his colleagues are preparing for their own investigation and are crafting a legislative overreaction to this nonsense. Which will wind up being the larger expense to the Idaho taxpayer: the cost of the investigation, the cost of defending the lawsuits that arise from the unnecessary (and, no doubt, unconstitutional) legislation, or the modest medical reimbursements?
Mr. Crane and others should do the right thing this time — learn from the ill-considered investigations done by your counterparts in other states’ full-time legislatures and skip this witch hunt.
