J.R. Simplot's Legacy

Simplot loved a good joke

Simplot loved a good joke and laughed until he cried at the best ones. But even his closest friends say they never heard him tell an off-color joke. He swore like a sailor and peppered his speeches with remarks that made his hosts squirm with embarrassment, but found dirty jokes distasteful. And he seldom if ever had a bad word to say about anyone.

"Imagine all the business deals he was in, all the people he's known," Dean Summers said. "You'd think there would be some strained relationships or animosities. Not all business deals end up well. But I never once heard him bad-mouth anyone. How many of us can look in the mirror and say we never spoke ill of anyone? Jack could.

"He had the most positive attitude in the world. He never had a bad meal, never stayed in a bad motel, never had a bad day."
