Idaho Sen. Jim Risch backed into an endorsement of Ted Cruz Wednesday, arriving there by “process of elimination” in an appearance on the CNN program “Situation Room” with Wolf Blitzer.

Politico was among the news organizations that picked up on the exchange. The Democratic National Committee also posted an excerpt on YouTube.

Risch told Blitzer he would not support Donald Trump and said John Kasich was too far behind in the race.

“So by process of elimination that gets you to Ted Cruz,” Risch said. “At this point, there’s no choice.”

Blitzer noted that Risch was thus the third Republican senator to endorse Cruz, behind Lindsay Graham of South Carolina and Mike Lee of Utah.

“Did I just endorse, Wolf?” Risch asked.

“You sort of said you prefer him over the other two,” Blitzer responded.

“I guess it depends on your definition,” the senator replied.
