Maybe you use Twitter to follow members of the Idaho Legislature, but whose tweets are they watching? A data analytics firm has the answer.

Quorum Analytics, which does legislative data tracking and outreach, has mined its database of Twitter handles to see who federal and state lawmakers follow. Typically, the most-watched accounts by lawmakers are fellow politicians, media, legislative bodies and political parties. And Idaho is no exception.

The most-followed account in the Legislature, followed by 26 lawmakers, is Gov. Butch Otter.

No. 2 is a journalist, Kevin Richert of Idaho Education News, with 24 followers.

Third, with 23 followers, is the Idaho Republican Party.

Rounding out the top five are Lt. Gov. Brad Little with 21 followers and former State Sen. and Republican candidate for governor Russ Fulcher, with 20.

The data show slightly less Twitter usage and interest among Idaho lawmakers compared to their counterparts in other states, said Emma Thomas of Quorum. Of the 105 Idaho legislators, 53 have Twitter accounts, just over half.

Nationally, the most-watched account among the 3,500 state lawmakers the firm tracks has 31 followers on average, also a little higher than Idaho’s numbers.

The firm also looked at results for the 535 members of Congress, where all eyes appear to be on the media, all the time. The most-followed account in Congress was the politics website TheHill. All of the Top 5 Twitter accounts followed by Washington lawmakers, and nine of the Top 10, are media sites or reporters.
