New Aladdin trailer gives peek at Will Smith as the Genie
The new trailer sets up a familiar plot for Disney fans: fantasy, adventure, even a mysterious cave with a lion head entrance, where you just know the street-dwelling hero will find an enchanted lamp.
But let’s face it: Will Smith as an all-blue Genie is all anyone wants to talk about.
Disney unleashed its second trailer for the live-action version of “Aladdin,” which opens in theaters on Sunday, May 24, during the 61st Grammy Awards. In it, audiences got their first look at Will Smith recreating the role that the late and legendary comedian and actor Robin Williams first brought to life.
What they saw, in one way, fit with that theme of familiarity. The “Arabian Nights” song that pierces the background. The aforementioned cave with the lion-head entrance. The monkey, presumably still named Abu, just like in the 1992 animated Disney classic, sitting on Aladdin’s shoulder.
But in another way, it was completely jarring. Because that’s Will Smith talking at about the :50 mark of the trailer, but he’s very blue, and very much made out of clouds.
Folks on social media didn’t quite know what to make of it. Suffice to say, like one Twitter user did Sunday night, the reaction to the all-blue Will Smith as Genie has been “VISCERAL.”
Some found it downright scary.
Others found parallels with other colorful movie characters. Think “Avatar.”
Or “Shrek,” in a different hue:
Or, for anyone who follows the Fox-turned-Netflix sitcom “Arrested Development,” Tobias Funke as an understudy for the Blue Man Group:
And sure, some people loved it, too.
But one thing’s for sure. Many of us weren’t ready for it.
