Payette teen’s shooting death still under investigation

The Payette County Sheriff's Office is investigating the Tuesday evening shooting death of a 17-year-old boy at a home near New Plymouth, but deputies are still trying to determine if the death was accidental or a homicide.

“It's definitely not a suicide," Lt. Andy Creech told the Statesman Wednesday. "It was a different person handling the gun when it went off."

The teen who died was a Payette resident who was visiting the home in the 5000 block of Highway 52 when the shooting was reported about 8:15 p.m., Creech said.

Two other people — one teen and one adult — were present, and one of them called police immediately after the shooting, he said. The boy was dead when deputies arrived, he said.

Idaho State Police are assisting with the investigation, Creech said. An autopsy will be conducted, he said.

Detectives seized a number of weapons from the home, the lieutenant said, but he declined to provide details.
