A Garden City boy who discovered a discarded gun in May and brought the weapon to his grandparents was honored by police Tuesday.
The gun was tied to a convenience store robbery earlier this year. On May 2, Allen Newman, 35, was arrested on charges related to robbing a Jacksons convenience store on the 9500 block of Chinden Boulevard. He reportedly fled the scene and discarded a loaded firearm in a residential neighborhood, Garden City police reported.
Newman later pleaded guilty to three of the five charges filed against him in that case and will be up for sentencing Aug. 25, according to court documents.
Alex Call, 11, of Garden City found the weapon soon after the robbery, and brought it to his grandparents right away. Call’s grandparents notified police and because of that, no one was hurt by the gun, police said.
Call was awarded the Civilian Medal of Appreciation for his actions at Garden City City Hall Tuesday, police said.
