A Nampa man accused of abducting, beating and torturing his former girlfriend has agreed to plead guilty to two counts of aggravated battery in exchange for prosecutors dropping other charges.
Arturo Mendoza, 34, has been in the Canyon County jail on $5 million bond since February, accused of kidnapping and repeatedly beating an ex-girlfriend who had taken his cell phone. Three more felony charges, of criminal solicitation to commit a crime, were added in June in connection to letters he sent from jail allegedly aiming to discourage the victim from testifying against him.
The victim, a 26-year-old Caldwell woman, required surgery for a fractured thigh and knee, and had "multiple injuries all over her body," according to court documents. She told investigators Mendoza assaulted her with numerous items including a baseball bat, a wrench, a rake and a lit cigarette.
Mendoza's trial had been scheduled to begin July 28, but he entered the guilty pleas Friday. His sentencing is set for Sept. 24.
