A piece of a structure that was being demolished at 52 E. State Ave. Monday morning fell and hit a gas line meter that was exposed above the ground, according to Byron Defenbach, spokesman for Intermountain Gas.
Gas leaked from the line for two hours before it was secured by Intermountain Gas crews at 9:48 a.m., Defenbach said. Crews severed the gas line and removed it from the demolition site shortly thereafter.
No injuries were reported, but occupants of eight nearby buildings were briefly ushered out of the area.
“The reason those eight houses were evacuated was because there was no wind today, and so the gas was accumilating in the area,” said Kevin Fedrizzi, a division chief for the Meridian Fire Department.
