The Board of Ada County Commissioners is alerting citizens to an apparent scam using Ada County government telephone numbers.
The Commissioners' Office has received several phone calls in the past two weeks from concerned citizens stating they have received a threatening call or voice mail, which appears to be from an Ada County phone number. Most recent reports indicate the Commissioners’ Office telephone line (208-287-7000) and previously other county phone numbers have been fraudulently used by scammers who have programmed the numbers into their caller ID, making it appear they are calling from Ada County, when in fact they are not. When scammers reach an individual or their voice mail, they reference a supposed case number, telling the prospective victim that if he/she does not contact them at a 1-800 number within a specific time frame to pay an overdue bill, that uniformed officers will arrive at their door to arrest them.
Commissioners and other county officials would like the public to know that such calls are not legitimate, and do not come from Ada County. Any such calls appearing to be from a county or other government phone number should be researched and validated prior to providing personal information or payments of any kind. Further, Commissioners would like to point out similar scams by individuals claiming to be law enforcement officials and other county representatives have been in circulation for some time.
Citizens should contact an official county or law enforcement office if they are faced with such a situation and are not sure if it’s legitimate. Anyone receiving such a call that has significant concerns they wish to report to law enforcement, may contact Ada County Sheriff’s non-emergency dispatch at 377-6790.
