Twenty-one syphilis cases have been reported in Canyon County since January 2015 — almost four times the number expected by Southwest District Health.
“The majority of cases have been young Caucasian males (average age 29), gay or bisexual, who report both alcohol and substance abuse,” said Randi Pedersen, an epidemiologist for Southwest District Health. “We are concerned because many cases report meeting sex partners online.”
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease. Symptoms can be mild or difficult to detect and can go away without treatment. If left untreated, the disease may lead to difficulty in muscle movement, blindness, paralysis, damage to internal organs, dementia or death.
