Firefighters quickly knocked down the fire and prevented it from spreading to nearby buildings, but closing a section of Emerald Street Sections of Emerald Street snarled traffic for drivers, Boise Deputy Fire Chief and Fire Marshal Romeo Gervais said.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but an investigator was headed to the scene shortly before 5 p.m., Gervais said.
The grass fire was reported around 3:30 p.m. in a half-acre vacant lot north of Emerald off West Preece Drive, Ada County dispatchers said. A pile of lumber caught fire, but no buildings were damaged. The lot lies off Preece between a residence and a mortgage company.
By 4 p.m. the fire was reportedly under control, but firefighters stayed on the scene for mop-up.
