A Boise police officer was hospitalized with head and leg injuries late Wednesday night after an accident involving a teenager, according to the Boise Police Department.
The collision – reportedly the last of a series of crashes involving the young driver – occurred at about 10:33 p.m. in the intersection of East Chinden Boulevard and Veterans Memorial Parkway.
The 17-year-old Boise girl was charged with felony aggravated DUI and three misdemeanor counts of leaving the scene of the crash. She was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries, then transported to juvenile detention.
Both the officer and the girl were treated and released from the hospital.
“We’re thankful that neither the officer nor the teen driver was seriously hurt during what could have been a much more serious outcome,” Boise Police Deputy Chief of Operations Eugene Smith said in a press release Thursday. “Witnesses stepped forward to help our officers piece together what happened. Again, considering the series of events, it’s very fortunate everyone walked away.”
The BPD officer, a 6-year veteran of the patrol division whose name has not been released, said through a department spokeswoman that he is "very thankful the driver hit him and not an innocent family." Police say patrol cars have special modifications that enable them to withstand a T-bone collision better than civilian vehicles.
The officer, who is recovering at home, also offered thanks to "the number of people who saw what happened and stopped to assist and make sure he was OK," police said.
Before crashing into the side of the BPD patrol car, the girl reportedly rear-ended a vehicle near the intersection of North Cole Road and West Northview Street, causing that vehicle to hit an Ada County Sheriff’s deputy patrol vehicle, Boise police said. No one in that crash reported injuries.
When the deputy involved attempted to speak with the girl, she reportedly drove off. She was then involved in a crash near the intersection of Cole and West Ustick roads – and again fled the scene, striking several garbage cans along the way, police said. The last vehicle she struck was a Boise police car on Chinden Boulevard near Veterans Memorial Parkway.
Witnesses told responding officers the girl was driving north on Veterans Memorial Parkway and ran a red light before broadsiding the Boise police patrol car.
Investigators said they determined the teen was intoxicated with alcohol and other drugs. They drew blood at the hospital for evidence.
The incident is still under investigation by Idaho State Police, the Ada County Sheriff’s Office and Boise police.
