Bryon K. Vaughn, 50 of Middleton, was headed north when a deer ran in front of his 1996 Ford F-250 pickup at 10:11 p.m. Vaughn swerved to avoid hitting the deer, lost control of the pickup and struck the barrow pit at milepost 69, north of Horseshoe Bend.
Passenger Tesha J. Sunday, 42, also from Middleton, was taken by air ambulance to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, according to the Idaho State Police.
Neither Vaughn nor Sunday were wearing seat belts, the ISP reported.
The southbound lane of Idaho Highway 55 was blocked for two hours.
